Working with Securus Technologies to Fight Violent Crimes

It is one thing to get a violent offender off the streets, it is another to be able to anticipate their moves and catch them before they are able to hurt anyone. Part of my duties as an officer is solving crimes, but years experience have also given me and my team the ability to spot signs crimes are going to be committed. These skills were enhanced this year when we discovered a new call monitoring system was installed in the local prison.


My team was called in to the local jail to see the inmate telephone monitoring system in action. Securus Technologies installed the new equipment, and it was going to revolutionize how officers get ahead of crimes instead of always being in a reactive state. Violence in the prison reached a new high this year, so officials decided it was time to join the other 2,650 prison systems in the country already making use of the monitoring device.


The way the telephone call monitor works is simple, LBS software scans every call that the inmates are making on the phones throughout the jail. Instead of officers in a call center manually listening in, the software does all the work more efficiently. If an alert goes out violence or drugs are being mentioned, officers can take action before trouble arises.


The way my team uses the software is setting up an alert for a suspect we are looking for. If any inmates are talking about this suspect, we get the alert and if warranted, we take action. This year we have been able to locate fugitives and stop crimes in progress thanks to the timely responses of the LBS software and the covert alert feature. Our city has certainly benefited from the new call monitoring system on several fronts.

Dick and Betsy DeVos have just lifted the veil on their philanthropy by taking it to a whole new level – and MLive was there to cover it all. Though Betsy kindly declined to be the one interviewed this time around, the wonderful Dick was more than ready to step up to the plate and give an update – which many had been dying to hear.
